Waterproofing: The Detail That Protects Your Building

Water damage is one of the most expensive defects to fix. Getting waterproofing right during construction costs a fraction of the repair.

Waterproofing is usually hidden behind finishes, which makes it easy to under-specify and expensive to fix. Leaks in basements, roofs and wet areas damage finishes, corrode reinforcement and can make spaces unusable.

Choose the right system for each location

There is no single best membrane. Basements below the water table, exposed roofs, podium decks, bathrooms and pools each need a system designed for their water pressure, movement and exposure. Bituminous, PVC, TPO, cementitious and liquid-applied systems all have their place.

Details matter more than materials

Most leaks happen at junctions: pipe penetrations, drains, upstands, expansion joints and changes of material. These details should be drawn, approved and inspected before anything is covered.

Test before you cover

  • Flood test roofs and wet areas for at least 24 to 48 hours.
  • Inspect and photograph every junction before protection layers go on.
  • Keep manufacturer warranties and installation records with the handover file.
